Turns out it was an issue with a DLL related to my onboard intel video card that was conflicting with my nvidia m2000. I have updated the drivers from the dell site *the drivers from the intel and nvidia sites would not work.
I now have to right click and select the nvidia card to start the app but other than that everything is working well.
